The International Air Transport Association is warning that an extended ban on laptops on board aircraft could hurt business. The issue was high on the agenda at a meeting of the global airlines group in Cancun, Mexico. U.S. officials have expressed concern that explosives disguised as laptops could be directly detonated on-board an aircraft. The U.S. imposed restrictions on large electronic devices on flights in March. That move reportedly saw a drop in passengers. Before the ban was proposed, forecasts underscored a new golden age for airlines' profitability. At the same time, the IATA raised its 2017 outlook for the sector to $31.4 billion dollars. Building on IBM’s global Green Horizons initiative, researchers at the new lab are working closely with experts from South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to analyze historical and real-time data from environmental monitoring stations. Using machine learning and cognitive models, the data collected in the City of Johannesburg, the City of Tshwane and the Vaal Industrial Triangle will help provide more insight about air pollution and model the effectiveness of intervention strategies. The project has recently been extended to predict ground level ozone and air quality forecasting. Read more: http://ibm.biz/BdrgGt
Although Africa has the second largest population of any continent, it only accounts for 3% of global air traffic. The key reason for such scenario has been same for the last several years: poor infrastructure, stalled liberalisation, high taxes, fuel charges, lack of intercity routes, lack of regular flights flying them, and lack of profitable airlines competing.
